Lake Cypress Springs, known as the “Best Kept Secret in Texas,” is an exquisite place to visit throughout the year. The lake site provides an extraordinary family fun location in Franklin County. The lake is within a Northeast Texas reservoir located near Mount Vernon, Pittsburg, Winnsboro, and Mount Pleasant. 

Lake Cypress Springs holds thirty-four-hundred (3400) acres of water across seven miles. The lake is a spring-fed reservoir with an average depth of nineteen (19) feet. The maximum lake depth is fifty-six (56) feet with a forty-seven (47) mile shoreline. The surface elevation is around three-hundred-seventy-eight (378) feet.

Lake Cypress Springs is twenty-five minutes from Pittsburg and Winnsboro, Texas.

And the lake is approximately twenty minutes from Mount Vernon, and thirty minutes from Mount Pleasant.  Lake Cypress Springs is approximately two hours away from the Dallas, Texas area.

History of Lake Cypress Springs

Approval to begin construction on the lake related dam was given in late November 1966. The dam construction began in 1968 and was finished in 1971.  

Lake Cypress Springs is originally known as Big Cypress Creek Lake (during the construction of the dam). And, at a later time, the lake was known as Lake Franklin County. Lake Cypress Springs was officially named in early April 1971.

Lake Cypress Springs offers a variety for fishing various species. Fishing populations include spotted bass, largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, sunfish, and bluegill. Historical stocking of the lake includes Florida largemouth bass, blue catfish, channel catfish, black crappie, sunfish, and walleye.

Moderate abundance exists in the lake for largemouth bass and spotted bass. Quality size sunfish and bluegill are available as well. White bass are in high density in Lake Cypress Springs along with a medium density of crappie.

Excellent angling opportunities exist for spotted bass and crappie. A good opportunity exists for largemouth bass, catfish, white bass, and sunfish. Within the lake area, the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department has installed fish-attracting structures

Largemouth bass spawn in the Spring season in Lake Cypress Springs. The bass prefers to nest in the quieter locations of the lake. Largemouth bass and spotted basses like to seek cover under logs, vegetation, and rock ledges.
